This exhibition brings together the powerful vision of the acclaimed contemporary artist Sean Scully (born 1945 in Dublin, Ireland) and the majesty of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by the legendary 16th- century Venetian architect Andrea Palladio. Conceived especially for this presentation throughout the Abbey, HUMAN is devoted to the fundamental tension between our heart’s striving in a world of beauty and struggle and our soul’s yearning for eternal transcendence.
Featuring around forty new and recent paintings, sculptures, works on paper and stained glass windows, HUMAN takes visitors on an intimate journey through the various artistic fields that Scully has mastered since the early 1970s. Scully’s unique, innovative vocabulary of horizontal and vertical stripes, for which he is internationally renowned, which has now embraced figurative composition, is on rich display throughout. His vision transforms the Abbey into something that is timeless in its sublimity.
La mostra fonde la potente visione di un celebre artista contemporaneo come Sean Scully (nato a Dublino nel 1945) e il maestoso contesto dell’Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore, il complesso architettonico cinque- centesco progettato dal veneziano Andrea Palladio. Appositamente concepita per questo spazio, HUMAN ruota attorno alla tensione essenziale tra i moti del cuore in un mondo di bellezza e di lotta e l’anelito dell’anima verso la trascendenza immortale.
Con circa quaranta opere inedite o recenti – tra dipinti a olio, sculture, lavori su carta e vetrate colorate – HUMAN conduce i visitatori in un viaggio intimo fra i diversi ambiti artistici frequentati da Scully dall’ inizio degli anni settanta. L’innovativo vocabolario visivo per cui l’artista è celebre a livello internazionale – fatto di strisce orizzontali e verticali e ora giunto a comprendere anche la figurazione – è presente ovunque. La sua visione trasforma il monastero in un’entità fuori dal tempo, come ogni esempio del sublime.
